Norfolk Island Pine Seed Season Looks Strong This Year

Norfolk Island Pine season is looking good this year.

After a lot of rain in Hawaii, we’re finally expecting a strong crop of Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria excelsa) seeds this season—one of those years where everything just lines up right.

Right now, seed clusters are forming high up in the trees, and we’re getting closer to harvest. These are always something special. The seeds are hand-harvested directly from the top of the trees—nothing touches the ground—and processed right there in Hawaii for proper drying.

Timing is everything with this species. Norfolk Island Pine seeds are short-lived and need to be planted quickly for best results. In most cases, they should be planted within about 30 days, or up to 60 days if kept refrigerated around 40°F.

Availability can vary a lot from year to year, and there are seasons where very little seed is produced. Based on current conditions, this is expected to be a strong year, and we’re already planning ahead for harvest toward the end of June.
