Sabal bermudana, commonly known as Bermuda Palmetto or Bermuda Fan Palm, is a distinctive evergreen fan palm endemic to Bermuda. As the island's only native palm species, it is valued for its ornamental appearance, sturdy growth habit, and historical significance.
This attractive species develops a solitary, upright trunk topped by a rounded crown of large, blue-green to gray-green fan-shaped leaves. The sturdy foliage is particularly well adapted to windy conditions, making Bermuda Palmetto an attractive choice for coastal landscapes, palm collections, and specimen plantings.
Sabal bermudana is also notable for its cold tolerance compared with many tropical fan palms. Established specimens have reportedly tolerated brief temperatures around 15–16°F (-9°C), although cold tolerance varies with growing conditions and plant maturity.
Its distinctive foliage, architectural form, and limited natural distribution make Bermuda Palmetto an interesting species for professional palm growers, specialty nurseries, botanical collections, and landscape production.
